New school term and i'm back to printing again : )) After lots of detailed pieces recently, it was really nice to return to some bold, simple patterns and prints. It takes a lot of restraint for me to keep it simple- and i have to be far more disciplined when making these prints than if i create a very detailed piece. I have to keep in my mind, less is more as i'm always tempted to add...a scroll here, a leaf there and before you know it I've got a decorative monster on my hands!
So concentrating on line and colour, i created these fun new prints using individual plates, that i can arrange on the paper as i like. I really enjoy this way of printing as it allows you to play around with the composition of the print and also experimnet far more with colour combinations. Almost like a lino print jigsaw puzzle!

Thank you, i had great fun printing these : ) Lizzie, i dont usually find too much of a problem with them staying put when i print, Because i use oil based inks, they are quite sticky and almost tacky when i roll the ink on the plates so it helps the little plates stick to the paper in the printing process. I find the best results come when i place them ink side up and lay the paper on the top. : )

Love the idea of creating a lino print puzzle :) I'm with you on struggling to keep it simple - "just a little bit more detail here..." - I need to do simple more often, as I have enjoyed the results when I do.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful, I am just about to start printing again myself, and must force myself to try some simpler combinations. I often use birds as I like folk art motifs. I am experimenting with 'fake lino' which carves easier, but getting large blank areas is almost impossible, so this cut out idea may work for me too. Beautiful prints, well done. Michele x

ReplyDelete@Michele, i hope the soft cut lino is working out ok? I have never used it, but the thought of carving a softer lino does seem very appealing. I just wander if it would hold up ok on finer cut lines ? You must let me know how you get on. Amanda x
